Last year had the privilege of working on A Quiet Place: Day One, at Leavesden Studios.
It’s the prequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place, the story of sightless alien monsters that hunt through sound. The original movie starred Emily Blunt and real life husband and screenplay co writer John Krasinski. Krasinski, who also directed both the original movie and its sequel A Quiet Place Part ll (2020) and considered the driving force of the franchise, passes the director’s baton for this latest instalment to Michael Sarnoski, with whom he helped create the story. The cast features Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) and Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator).
Day One takes the story way back to the day the aliens first came to Earth. It sees how the inhabitants of New York City, one of the most noisiest places possible on our planet, deal with the prospect of needing to be silent to survive. Expect thrills and scares in equal measure…
For me the most exciting thing personally was working with Djimon Hounsou. Like many, I was hypnotised by his character from the iconic Gladiator (2000), an eloquent, lovely, gentle giant of a man whose depth of performance along with that from of Lupita, sublime direction from Michael Sarnoski under the magnificent light and camera movement of cinematographer Pat Scola, will guarantee this movie is something special when it drops in the summer.
